To build a simple DIY patio, you will need:

Mark out the area of your patio and dig it down 6 inches.
Add a 6-inch layer of gravel or limestone paver base and compact it.
Spread a thin layer of leveling sand over the base and smooth it out.
Begin laying the pavers, starting at one edge of the patio. Work your way across, placing the pavers as close together as possible.
If desired, install plastic edging around the perimeter of the patio.
Fill in any gaps between the pavers with leveling sand.

Tips:

For a simple patio, use one size of paver and a square or rectangular design.
If you are using limestone paver base, lightly wet it before compacting.
Use a tamper or plate compactor to create a firm base.
Be sure to level the pavers as you lay them.
