A DIY wooden bird feeder is a simple and rewarding project that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a great way to attract birds to your yard and provide them with a safe and reliable source of food. All you need is a few basic tools and materials, and a little creativity.
To build a basic wooden bird feeder, you will need the following materials:
- Cedar fence picket
- Dowel rod
- Exterior wood glue
- Small exterior finish nails or wood screws
- Drill and drill bits
- Hammer and/or screwdriver
- Common carpentry tools like a tape measure, pencil, saw, and framing square
- Safety equipment (work gloves and safety glasses)
Once you have gathered your materials, follow these steps:
- Cut the cedar fence picket into the following pieces:
- 2 pieces 10 inches long for the sides
- 2 pieces 7 inches long for the top and bottom
- 1 piece 4 inches long for the roof
- 1 piece 3 inches long for the perch
- Drill a hole in each side piece, about 1 inch below the top. This is where the perch will go.
- Glue and nail the side pieces to the top and bottom pieces, forming a square frame.
- Glue and nail the roof piece to the back of the frame.
- Drill a hole in the center of the roof piece for hanging.
- Cut the dowel rod to length for the perch. Insert the perch into the holes in the side pieces and glue in place.
- Sand the bird feeder and finish with a coat of exterior polyurethane (optional).
- Hang your bird feeder in a sheltered location and fill it with your favorite bird seed.
