To make a simple DIY worm compost bin, you will need:

• Two plastic bins (5-gallon size is ideal)
• A drill
• Shredded newspaper or cardboard
• Red wiggler composting worms (available from bait shops or online retailers)

Instructions:

1. Drill small holes in the bottom of one of the bins. This will allow excess liquid to drain out.
2. Place the bin with the holes in the bottom inside the other bin. This will create a catch-basin for the liquid.
3. Add a 3-4 inch layer of shredded newspaper or cardboard to the bin with the holes.
4. Add the worms to the bin.
5. Add a small amount of food scraps to the bin.
6. Cover the bin with a lid or piece of cardboard.

To maintain your worm bin:

• Keep the bedding moist but not soggy.
• Add food scraps to the bin regularly.
• Avoid adding meat, dairy, or oily foods to the bin.
• Harvest the worm castings (fertilizer) every few months.

Tips:

• Worms don’t like light, so keep the bin in a dark place.
• Worms are sensitive to temperature, so keep the bin in a cool place in the summer and a warm place in the winter.
• If you’re going to be away from home for more than a week, have a friend or neighbor check on your worm bin and add food scraps if needed.
