A French drain is a trench filled with gravel and perforated pipe that collects and diverts groundwater away from your home or property. It is a popular DIY project for homeowners with drainage problems.
To install a French drain, you will need:
- A shovel
- A tamper
- Landscape fabric
- Gravel
- Perforated pipe
- Fittings
- A saw
Instructions:
- Dig a trench that is 12-18 inches deep and 10-12 inches wide.
- Line the trench with landscape fabric.
- Pour a 4-inch layer of gravel into the bottom of the trench.
- Lay the perforated pipe in the trench, making sure that it has a slight slope (1/4 inch per foot) away from your home or property.
- Cover the pipe with gravel, leaving 6 inches of space at the top of the trench.
- Wrap the landscape fabric over the gravel and secure it with landscaping pins.
- Backfill the trench with dirt and tamp it down.
Once your French drain is installed, it is important to maintain it by inspecting it regularly and cleaning it out as needed. To clean out your French drain, simply remove the landscape fabric and shovel out the gravel. You can then rinse the gravel with water and replace it.
