DIY wooden dog crate:
Materials:
- Plywood
- 1×3 boards
- Dowel rods
- Pocket hole screws
- Butt hinges
- Surface bolt latch
- Wood glue
- Wood putty
- Edge banding (optional)
- Paint or stain
Tools:
- Circular saw
- Miter saw
- Drill/driver
- Pocket hole jig
- Dowel jig (optional)
- Forstner bit (optional)
- Paint sprayer (optional)
Instructions:
- Cut the plywood to size for the crate walls, floor, and roof.
- Assemble the crate carcass using pocket hole screws.
- Cut the 1×3 boards to size for the face frame and door frame.
- Drill pocket holes in the face frame and door frame pieces.
- Assemble the face frame and door frame using pocket hole screws.
- Cut the dowel rods to size for the crate rails.
- Paint or stain the crate rails.
- Attach the dowel rails to the crate carcass using wood glue.
- Attach the face frame to the crate carcass using pocket hole screws.
- Hang the door on the crate using butt hinges.
- Install the surface bolt latch on the door.
- Finish the crate with wood putty and edge banding (optional).
Tips:
- Make sure to measure your dog carefully before building the crate. The crate should be large enough for your dog to stand up and turn around comfortably.
- Use a biscuit joiner to help align the crate pieces for a stronger joint.
- If you are using a sprayer to paint or stain the crate, be sure to wear a mask and gloves.
- Allow the crate to dry completely before using it.
