Diy Wood Fired Pizza Oven

Diy Wood Fired Pizza Oven

To build a DIY wood-fired pizza oven, you will need the following materials:

  • Refractory bricks
  • Fire clay mortar
  • Insulation material (optional)
  • Outer brick veneer (optional)
  • Concrete pad
  • Arch form
  • Tools (shovel, wheelbarrow, level, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. Build a concrete pad for the oven. The pad should be at least 8 inches thick and extend at least 12 inches beyond the perimeter of the oven.
  2. Build an arch form. This can be made from wood or metal. The arch form should be the size and shape of the oven opening.
  3. Lay the fire bricks on the concrete pad, using fire clay mortar to bond them together. Start at the base of the oven and work your way up to the arch. Stagger the brick joints to create a strong structure.
  4. Once the arch is complete, remove the arch form and apply a thin coat of fire clay mortar to the entire surface of the oven. This will help to seal the oven and prevent heat from escaping.
  5. If desired, you can add an outer brick veneer to the oven. This will give the oven a finished look and help to insulate it.
  6. Allow the oven to cure for at least 24 hours before using it for the first time.

To use the oven, start by heating it up with wood for at least 30 minutes. Once the oven is hot, you can start cooking your pizzas!

Tips:

  • For a more efficient oven, insulate the fire bricks with a layer of insulation material.
  • You can use a variety of different materials to build the oven’s outer brick veneer. Red bricks, cobblestones, and concrete blocks are all popular choices.
  • Be sure to leave a small opening in the front of the oven for the wood and a small opening in the back for the smoke to escape.
  • Use a pizza peel to slide the pizzas into and out of the oven.
  • Be careful when cooking in the oven, as the bricks can be very hot.

Safety:

  • Always wear gloves and eye protection when working with hot bricks and mortar.
  • Never leave the oven unattended while it is in use.
  • Be careful when handling hot pizzas.
  • Allow the oven to cool completely before cleaning it.
