DIY Storage Ottoman

Materials:

• 3/4" plywood for the base, top, and bottom
• 2" x 2" lumber for corner braces
• 1" x 1" lumber for cleats
• Batting
• Upholstery fabric
• Piano hinge
• Lid stops
• Felt pads
• Wood glue
• Finish nails or screws
• Staple gun

Instructions:

1. Cut the plywood to size for the base, top, and bottom.
2. Assemble the base box by gluing and screwing the sides together.
3. Attach the cleats to the inside of the base box, 3/4" above the bottom edge.
4. Attach reinforcing blocks to each inside corner of the base box.
5. Glue and screw the bottom piece to the cleats.
6. Cut the 2" x 2" lumber into four 19" boards for corner braces.
7. Attach the corner braces to the inside of the base box, flush with the top and bottom edges.
8. Cut the plywood to size for the top.
9. Attach the piano hinge to the back of the top and the back of the base box.
10. Attach the lid stops to the inside of the base box, 3/4" from the top edge.
11. Cut the batting and upholstery fabric to size, with enough extra fabric to wrap around the base box and top.
12. Spray the back of the fabric with fast-drying spray adhesive and attach the batting to it.
13. Starting at the center rear of the base box, wrap the fabric around the sides and overlap it at the seam by 1/2 inch.
14. Fold the fabric over the top and bottom of the base box and staple it in place.
15. Repeat steps 12-14 to upholster the top.
16. Attach the felt pads to the bottom of the base box.
