To build a DIY stone patio, you will need:
- Stones or pavers
- Sand
- Gravel
- Landscape fabric
- Edging (optional)
- Plan your patio. Decide on the size and shape of your patio, and mark out the area with stakes and string.
- Excavate the area. Dig down 6-12 inches, depending on the thickness of your stones or pavers.
- Install a base layer. Spread a 4-6 inch layer of gravel over the excavated area and tamp it down until firm.
- Lay the stones or pavers. Start on one side of the patio and work your way across. Place the stones or pavers on the base layer and tap them into place with a rubber mallet.
- Fill the joints. Sweep sand into the joints between the stones or pavers.
- Install edging (optional). Edging can help to keep the stones or pavers in place and prevent weeds from growing up. To install edging, dig a trench around the perimeter of the patio and set the edging into place.
- Water the patio. This will help to settle the sand and compact the base layer.
