DIY Stair Runner

What you need:

• Stair runner
• Rug pad (optional)
• Staple gun and staples
• Carpet knife
• Painter’s tape
• Measuring tape
• Carpenter’s square (optional)

Instructions:

1. Measure your stairs. Measure the length and width of each tread and riser. You will also need to measure the distance from the top of the nosing to the bottom of the riser.
2. Cut the runner to size. Add 6 inches to the length of each tread and riser to allow for overhang and trimming. Cut the runner to size using a carpet knife.
3. Install the rug pad (optional). If you are using a rug pad, cut it to size and place it on each tread.
4. Attach the runner to the stairs. Start at the bottom step and staple the runner to the tread, centering it as much as possible. Trim the excess runner at the nosing. Continue stapling the runner to each tread and riser, working your way up the stairs.
5. Trim the runner at the top step. Cut the runner so that it overhangs the top step by about 6 inches. Fold the overhang under and staple it to the back of the tread.
6. Secure the runner with stair rods (optional). Stair rods are metal rods that are installed across the stairs to hold the runner in place. To install stair rods, mark the location of the holes on the treads and risers using a pencil. Drill pilot holes at the marked locations and screw the stair rods in place.

Tips:

• If you are installing a runner on a curved staircase, you will need to cut the runner into smaller pieces and fit them together like puzzle pieces.
• If you are installing a runner on a staircase with winders (triangular steps), you will need to cut the runner into wedges and fit them together carefully.
• Be sure to use staples that are long enough to go through the runner, rug pad, and tread.
• Trim the runner carefully so that it fits snugly on the stairs.
• If you are installing stair rods, be careful not to overtighten the screws, as this can damage the runner.
