To make a basic DIY soap recipe, you will need:
- Oils (such as coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil)
- Lye
- Distilled water
- Essential oils (optional)
- Colorants (optional)
- Herbs or flowers (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare your work area. Wear gloves, goggles, and a long-sleeved shirt to protect yourself from the lye. Make sure your work area is well-ventilated.
- Melt the oils. Place the solid oils in a double boiler or saucepan over low heat until melted. Remove from heat and add the liquid oils.
- Make the lye solution. Slowly add the lye to the distilled water in a well-ventilated area. Stir until the lye is completely dissolved. The lye solution will be very hot, so be careful.
- Bring the oils and lye solution to the same temperature. This is called "trace." You can use a thermometer to check the temperature, or you can do the "spoon test." To do the spoon test, dip a spoon into the lye solution and then into the oils. If the mixture forms a thick trail that holds its shape for a few seconds, it is at trace.
- Pour the lye solution into the oils. Stir vigorously until the mixture thickens and becomes opaque. This is called "saponification."
- Add essential oils, colorants, and herbs or flowers (optional). Stir gently to combine.
- Pour the soap batter into molds. Cover the molds with plastic wrap and let the soap cure for 4-6 weeks.
- Once the soap is cured, remove it from the molds and cut it into bars. Let the soap bars cure for another 2-4 weeks before using.
Tips:
- Use a kitchen scale to accurately measure your ingredients.
- Be careful not to overmix the soap batter, as this can make the soap hard and brittle.
- If you are using essential oils, be sure to choose oils that are safe for skin use.
- You can add a variety of ingredients to your soap, such as herbs, flowers, honey, oatmeal, or coffee grounds.
- Be patient! Soapmaking takes time, but the results are worth it.
