Shaker cabinet doors are a popular DIY project because they are relatively simple to make and can be customized to fit any kitchen or bathroom. To make shaker cabinet doors, you will need the following materials:
- Wood for the rails and stiles (poplar is a good choice)
- Plywood for the center panel
- Wood glue
- Screws or pocket hole screws
- Clamps
- Miter saw
- Table saw (optional)
- Drill
Instructions:
- Cut the rails and stiles to length.
- Cut a groove in the center of each rail and stile using a table saw or router. The groove should be 1/4" deep and wide enough to accommodate the thickness of the plywood center panel.
- Apply wood glue to the grooves and the tenons on the ends of the rails.
- Assemble the door frame by sliding the rails into the grooves in the stiles. Clamp the door frame in place and allow the glue to dry completely.
- Cut the plywood center panel to size.
- Apply wood glue to the grooves in the door frame and slide the center panel into place. Clamp the door frame in place and allow the glue to dry completely.
- Drill pilot holes and screw or pocket hole screw the door frame together.
- Sand and finish the door to your liking.
Tips:
- Make sure to cut the rails and stiles to the correct length. The rails should be slightly shorter than the opening width to allow for a small gap. The stiles should be slightly taller than the opening height to allow for a small gap.
- Be careful not to overtighten the clamps when assembling the door frame. Overtightening the clamps can cause the wood to split.
- If you are using a table saw to cut the grooves, be sure to use a featherboard to keep the wood pressed against the fence.
- If you are using a router to cut the grooves, be sure to use a sharp bit and make multiple passes to achieve the desired depth.
- If the plywood center panel is slightly warped, you can try to flatten it by placing it under a weighted object for a few days.
- If you are painting the doors, be sure to use a high-quality primer and paint.
Once your shaker cabinet doors are finished, you can install them on your cabinets using hinges.
