Diy Retaining Wall

DIY retaining wall is a great way to create usable space in your yard and protect it from erosion. It is not a difficult project, but it is important to follow the steps carefully to ensure a sturdy and long-lasting wall.

Materials:

  • Concrete retaining wall blocks
  • Gravel
  • Geotextile fabric (optional)
  • Drainage pipe (optional)
  • Level
  • Tamper
  • String line
  • Stakes
  • Measuring tape
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

Steps:

  1. Plan the location of your retaining wall. Make sure it is level and that there is enough space behind the wall for backfill and drainage.
  2. Dig a trench along the planned location of the wall. The trench should be at least 12 inches deep and 4 inches wider than the blocks you will be using.
  3. Lay a geotextile fabric in the bottom of the trench. This will help to prevent weeds from growing and will also help to drain water away from the wall.
  4. Add a layer of gravel to the bottom of the trench. Tamp down the gravel to create a level base for the wall.
  5. Lay the first course of blocks on the gravel base. Make sure the blocks are level and plumb.
  6. Backfill behind the first course of blocks with gravel. Tamp down the gravel to compact it.
  7. Continue laying additional courses of blocks, backfilling and tamping after each course.
  8. If you are building a wall that is more than 24 inches tall, you may need to install a drainage pipe behind the wall. This will help to prevent water from building up behind the wall and causing it to fail.
  9. Once the wall is complete, backfill the remaining space behind the wall with soil. Tamp down the soil to compact it.
  10. Apply a sealant to the top of the wall to protect it from the elements.

Tips:

  • If you are building a wall on a slope, you may need to terrace the slope before starting construction. Terracing involves creating a series of level steps on the slope.
  • If you are building a wall near a building, make sure to leave a gap of at least 6 inches between the wall and the building. This will allow for drainage and will also prevent the wall from damaging the building foundation.
  • If you are building a wall that is more than 36 inches tall, you may need to consult with a professional engineer to ensure that the wall is properly designed and constructed.
