DIY retaining wall is a great way to create usable space in your yard and protect it from erosion. It is not a difficult project, but it is important to follow the steps carefully to ensure a sturdy and long-lasting wall.
Materials:
- Concrete retaining wall blocks
- Gravel
- Geotextile fabric (optional)
- Drainage pipe (optional)
- Level
- Tamper
- String line
- Stakes
- Measuring tape
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
Steps:
- Plan the location of your retaining wall. Make sure it is level and that there is enough space behind the wall for backfill and drainage.
- Dig a trench along the planned location of the wall. The trench should be at least 12 inches deep and 4 inches wider than the blocks you will be using.
- Lay a geotextile fabric in the bottom of the trench. This will help to prevent weeds from growing and will also help to drain water away from the wall.
- Add a layer of gravel to the bottom of the trench. Tamp down the gravel to create a level base for the wall.
- Lay the first course of blocks on the gravel base. Make sure the blocks are level and plumb.
- Backfill behind the first course of blocks with gravel. Tamp down the gravel to compact it.
- Continue laying additional courses of blocks, backfilling and tamping after each course.
- If you are building a wall that is more than 24 inches tall, you may need to install a drainage pipe behind the wall. This will help to prevent water from building up behind the wall and causing it to fail.
- Once the wall is complete, backfill the remaining space behind the wall with soil. Tamp down the soil to compact it.
- Apply a sealant to the top of the wall to protect it from the elements.
Tips:
- If you are building a wall on a slope, you may need to terrace the slope before starting construction. Terracing involves creating a series of level steps on the slope.
- If you are building a wall near a building, make sure to leave a gap of at least 6 inches between the wall and the building. This will allow for drainage and will also prevent the wall from damaging the building foundation.
- If you are building a wall that is more than 36 inches tall, you may need to consult with a professional engineer to ensure that the wall is properly designed and constructed.
