Diy Protein Skimmer

A DIY protein skimmer is a device that can be made at home to remove dissolved organic matter (DOM) from saltwater aquariums. DOM can include proteins, amino acids, and other organic compounds that can build up over time and lead to water quality problems. A protein skimmer works by creating a column of bubbles that rise through the water. As the bubbles rise, they attract and trap DOM molecules. The DOM molecules are then collected in a collection cup, which can be emptied regularly.

To make a DIY protein skimmer, you will need the following materials:

• Two plastic bottles (16-20 ounces)
• PVC pipe (1-2 inches in diameter, depending on the size of your aquarium)
• Wooden air stone
• Air pump
• Aquarium silicone
• PVC glue (if using PVC pipe)

Instructions:

1. Cut the top off of one of the plastic bottles.
2. Cut the bottom off of the other plastic bottle.
3. Glue the two bottle pieces together, with the cut ends facing each other. This will form a collection cup.
4. Cut a hole in the side of the PVC pipe, near the bottom. The hole should be just large enough to fit the air stone through.
5. Glue the air stone into the hole in the PVC pipe.
6. Attach the collection cup to the top of the PVC pipe.
7. Attach the air pump to the air stone.
8. Place the protein skimmer in your aquarium.

To adjust the protein skimmer, you can raise or lower the collection cup. The higher the collection cup is, the more bubbles will be created. The more bubbles that are created, the more DOM will be removed from the water.

It is important to note that DIY protein skimmers are not as effective as commercial protein skimmers. However, they can be a good option for budget-minded aquarists or for those who want to build their own equipment.
