DIY Paper Mache

Materials:

  • Old newspaper, comics, or magazines
  • Flour
  • Water
  • Salt (optional)
  • Paintbrush
  • Bowl
  • Armature (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Make the paper mache paste. Combine one part flour with two parts water in a bowl and stir until smooth. If desired, add a few tablespoons of salt to prevent mold growth.
  2. Tear or cut the newspaper, comics, or magazines into strips or pieces.
  3. Dip a strip of paper into the paste and wipe off any excess.
  4. Apply the paper strip to your armature or work surface.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the desired thickness is reached.
  6. Allow the paper mache to dry completely.
  7. Once the paper mache is dry, paint it as desired.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of paper types to create different textures and effects.
  • If you are using an armature, make sure it is sturdy enough to support the weight of the paper mache.
  • To create a smooth surface, sand the paper mache once it is dry.
  • You can also use paper mache to create molds. Once the paper mache is dry, simply remove it from the mold and decorate as desired.
