DIY Koi Pond

Step 1: Choose a location.

• Consider sun and shade. Koi need some shade during the hottest part of the day to avoid algae growth and water evaporation. Avoid large trees and areas subject to strong winds.
• Ensure there’s a nearby outdoor faucet so you can add water to the pond as needed.

Step 2: Mark out the pond dimensions.

• Koi need a deep pond, at least 3 feet deep. For around five koi, your pond should be 1,000 to 1,500 gallons, minimum. Ten or more koi will need double that capacity.

Step 3: Dig the pond.

• Dig the pond slightly deeper than 3 feet to allow for gravel and liner.
• Slope the sides of the pond so that they are at a 45-degree angle. This will help to prevent the liner from slipping.

Step 4: Lay the liner.

• Place a layer of underlayment in the bottom of the pond. This will protect the liner from punctures.
• Unroll the liner over the underlayment and make sure that it extends beyond the edges of the pond by at least 1 foot.
• Secure the liner in place with rocks or bricks.

Step 5: Add water and plants.

• Fill the pond with water and add some aquatic plants. Plants will help to oxygenate the water and provide shade for the koi.

Step 6: Add fish.

• Once the pond is cycled (i.e., the beneficial bacteria have established themselves), you can add your koi fish.
• Start with a few fish and add more gradually as the pond can support them.

Step 7: Maintain the pond.

• Regularly test the water quality and make adjustments as needed.
• Clean the pond filter and remove any debris.
• Feed the koi fish a high-quality diet.

• Use a pond skimmer to remove debris from the surface of the water.
• Use a pond pump to circulate the water and provide oxygen for the fish.
• Use a pond heater to keep the water temperature above freezing in the winter.
