To build a DIY gravel patio, you will need:
- Pea gravel
- Landscape fabric
- Paver base (optional)
- Edging (optional)
- Shovel
- Rake
- Tamper
- Marking spray paint
- Choose the location of your patio and mark it out with spray paint.
- Remove any grass or other vegetation from the area.
- Dig down about 3 inches.
- If your soil is loose or sandy, add a layer of paver base. Compact it with a tamper.
- Lay down landscaping fabric. Secure it with stakes.
- Add a layer of pea gravel, about 2-3 inches thick.
- Rake the gravel to smooth it out.
- If desired, add edging to keep the gravel in place.
- Your patio is now ready to use!
Tips:
- If you live in an area with cold winters, you may want to choose a different type of gravel, such as crushed limestone or granite. Pea gravel can be slippery when wet.
- To keep your patio looking its best, rake it regularly to remove any debris. You may also want to add a new layer of gravel every few years.
- If you plan on using your patio for heavy traffic, such as a parking area, you may want to add a thicker layer of gravel and compact it more thoroughly.
