DIY Chinese Lantern

Chinese lanterns are a beautiful and traditional decoration that can be used for any occasion. They are also relatively easy to make yourself, with just a few simple materials.

Materials:

• Construction paper or cardstock in various colors
• Glue stick or double-sided tape
• Scissors
• String or ribbon
• Optional: Hole punch, markers, or other embellishments

Instructions:

1. Cut two pieces of paper of the same size and color.
2. Fold the papers in half lengthwise.
3. Cut strips about 1/2 inch wide along the folded edge of each paper, leaving about 1 inch of paper at the bottom uncut.
4. Unfold the papers and lay them flat, with the cut strips facing up.
5. Apply glue or tape to the bottom edge of one paper and attach it to the bottom edge of the other paper, forming a cylinder.
6. Apply glue or tape to the top edge of the cylinder and seal it shut.
7. Use a hole punch to make two holes in the top of the cylinder, one on either side.
8. Thread a piece of string or ribbon through the holes and tie it to form a handle.
9. Decorate your lantern with markers, stickers, or other embellishments (optional).

Tips:

• For a more traditional look, use red paper for your lantern.
• You can also use different colors of paper to make a striped or patterned lantern.
• If you are using light-weight paper, you may want to reinforce the lantern by adding a layer of cardboard or construction paper to the inside.
• Be careful not to use too much glue or tape, as this can weaken the paper.
• If you are using a hole punch to make holes in the top of the lantern, be sure to punch them close to the edge, but not so close that they tear.
