Tools:
- Chimney brush
- Extension rods
- Dust sheet
- Duct tape
- Vacuum cleaner
- Safety glasses
- Mask
Steps:
- Lay a dust sheet in front of the fireplace.
- Secure the dust sheet to the fireplace with duct tape.
- Attach the chimney brush to the extension rods.
- Insert the chimney brush into the fireplace flue.
- Push the chimney brush up the flue, turning it as you go.
- Repeat step 5 until you reach the top of the flue.
- Pull the chimney brush back down the flue, turning it as you go.
- Vacuum up any soot that has fallen onto the dust sheet.
Tips:
- Be sure to wear safety glasses and a mask to protect yourself from soot and dust.
- If you have a heavy creosote buildup, it is best to call a professional chimney sweep.
- Sweep your chimney at least once a year, or more often if you use your fireplace frequently.
