DIY Cheerleader Costume

Materials:

• 1-2 yards of fabric in your desired colors (jersey knit is a good choice for its stretch and comfort)
• 1 yard of elastic (for the waistband and hem)
• Sewing machine or needle and thread
• Scissors
• Measuring tape

Instructions:

1. Cut a rectangle of fabric for the skirt. The length should be the desired length of your skirt, plus 1 inch for the seam allowance. The width should be twice the width of your waist.
2. Sew the two sides of the skirt together, leaving a 1-inch seam allowance.
3. Fold the top and bottom edges of the skirt over 1/2 inch and hem.
4. Thread the elastic through the top hem of the skirt, gathering it as you go. Sew the elastic together at the ends to form a waistband.
5. Cut two strips of fabric for the pom poms. Each strip should be about 12 inches long and 6 inches wide.
6. Stack the two strips of fabric together and fold them in half lengthwise.
7. Use a ruler to mark 1-inch intervals along the folded edge of the fabric.
8. Cut notches at the 1-inch marks, being careful not to cut all the way through the fabric.
9. Unfold the fabric and tie a piece of string tightly around the center.
10. Trim the edges of the fabric to create a rounded shape.
11. Fluff up the pom poms by gently pulling on the loops of fabric.

To complete your cheerleader costume:

• Wear a white or colored crop top or sports bra.
• Add white or colored leggings or shorts.
• Put on your pom poms and cheer!

Tips:

• If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can hand-stitch the skirt and pom poms together.
• To make your pom poms more durable, you can use a hot glue gun to secure the layers of fabric together.
• You can also add other embellishments to your costume, such as letters, numbers, or ribbons.
