A DIY aquarium chiller is a simple device that can be used to cool down the water in an aquarium. It is typically made using a dorm-sized refrigerator, plastic tubing, and PVC fittings. The tubing is coiled inside the refrigerator and connected to the aquarium using the PVC fittings. The refrigerator then cools the water in the tubing, which in turn cools the water in the aquarium.
To make a DIY aquarium chiller, you will need the following materials:
- A dorm-sized refrigerator
- 50 to 100 feet of 3/8 inch plastic tubing
- PVC fittings (90-degree elbows or straight connects, threaded or slip)
- Aquarium-safe silicone sealant
- 1/2 inch thin-wall PVC pipe
Once you have all of your materials, follow these steps to assemble your DIY aquarium chiller:
- Cut the plastic tubing to length, leaving enough extra tubing to reach from the aquarium to the refrigerator and back.
- Coil the tubing inside the refrigerator, making sure to leave enough space around the coil for air to circulate.
- Attach the PVC fittings to the ends of the tubing.
- Run the PVC pipe from the aquarium to the refrigerator and connect it to the PVC fittings on the tubing.
- Apply aquarium-safe silicone sealant to all of the connections to prevent leaks.
- Once the silicone sealant has dried, turn on the refrigerator and start pumping water through the chiller.
You can adjust the temperature of the water in the aquarium by adjusting the thermostat on the refrigerator. It is important to monitor the temperature of the water in the aquarium closely to make sure that it does not drop too low.
DIY aquarium chillers are a relatively inexpensive and easy way to cool down the water in an aquarium. They are especially useful for aquariums that house tropical fish, which require cooler water temperatures.
