DIY Soil Test:
To test your soil’s pH, mix 1/2 cup vinegar with a scoop of soil. If it fizzes, your soil is alkaline. Mix 1/2 cup water with a scoop of soil, then add baking soda. If it fizzes, your soil is acidic. If neither reaction occurs, your soil is neutral.
To test your soil for drainage, dig a hole 6 inches wide and 1 foot deep. Fill it with water and let it drain completely. Fill it with water again and time how long it takes to drain. If it takes more than 6 hours to drain, your soil has poor drainage.
To test your soil for earthworms, dig a hole 1 foot across and 1 foot deep. Place the soil on a tarp or piece of cardboard and sift through it with your hands. Count the number of earthworms you find. If you find at least 10 earthworms, your soil is healthy.
These are just a few simple DIY soil tests that you can do at home. For more accurate results, you can send a soil sample to a professional testing laboratory.
