To make DIY concrete landscape edging, you will need:
- Concrete mix
- Water
- Shovel
- Bucket
- Wheelbarrow (optional)
- Wood stakes
- Plywood
- Screws
- Saw
- Edging tool
- Dig a trench along the desired location of your edging. The trench should be 4-6 inches deep and at least as wide as the thickness of your edging.
- Cut plywood strips to the desired height of your edging.
- Stake the plywood strips in place, making sure they are level and vertical.
- Mix the concrete according to the package directions.
- Pour the concrete into the trench, using a shovel or wheelbarrow.
- Use an edging tool to smooth the top edge of the concrete.
- Cut control joints in the concrete every 8-10 feet. Control joints are shallow cuts that allow the concrete to crack in a controlled manner, preventing large cracks from forming.
- Allow the concrete to cure for at least 72 hours before removing the plywood forms.
Tips:
- For a stronger edging, use rebar or wire mesh in the concrete.
- To add decorative touches, such as bricks or stones, to your edging, press them into the wet concrete before it cures.
- If you are edging a curved area, use flexible plywood or bend the plywood strips into the desired shape.
Once your edging is cured, you can backfill the trench with dirt or mulch.
