DIY silk screen is a fun and creative way to print your own designs on fabric, paper, and other surfaces. It’s also a relatively inexpensive hobby to get started with, all you need are a few basic supplies.
To make your own silk screen, you will need:
- A silk screen frame
- Silk screen mesh
- Photo emulsion
- A transparency of your design
- A squeegee
- Ink
- A darkroom or exposure unit
- A washout booth
- A t-shirt or other garment to print on
Once you have your supplies, follow these steps:
- Coat the silk screen mesh with photo emulsion and let it dry in a darkroom or exposure unit.
- Place your transparency on top of the coated mesh and expose it to light. The light will harden the emulsion in the areas where the transparency is clear, and wash away the emulsion in the areas where the transparency is opaque.
- Rinse the screen with water to wash away the unexposed emulsion. You should now have a negative of your design on the screen.
- Place your t-shirt or other garment under the screen and pour ink onto the mesh.
- Use the squeegee to pull the ink across the screen, forcing it through the mesh and onto the garment.
- Let the ink dry and you’re done!
You can use DIY silk screen to print anything you can imagine, from simple designs to complex works of art. It’s a great way to express your creativity and make your own unique clothing and accessories.
