
To make DIY cinnamon rolls, you will need:
- For the dough:
- 1 cup warm milk
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 egg plus 1 egg yolk
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- For the filling:
- 2/3 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup softened butter
- For the glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Make the dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes, until the yeast is foamy. Stir in the egg, egg yolk, and melted butter. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- While the dough is rising, make the filling: In a medium bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a 12×18 inch rectangle. Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over top.
- Starting at the long end, roll the dough up tightly into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces. Place the rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and let the rolls rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
- Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- While the rolls are baking, make the glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Once the rolls are baked, let them cool for a few minutes before drizzling with the glaze.
- Serve and enjoy!
