Soundproofing walls DIY can be done by adding a second layer of drywall, using mass-loaded vinyl (MLV), or a combination of both.
To add a second layer of drywall, simply attach it to the existing wall studs with screws. Be sure to stagger the seams of the new drywall so that they don’t line up with the seams of the existing drywall. You can also use acoustical caulk to seal any gaps between the two layers of drywall.
MLV is a heavy, dense material that is very effective at blocking sound. To use MLV, cut it to size and attach it to the wall studs with screws or staples. Be sure to overlap the edges of the MLV by at least 6 inches and seal any gaps with acoustical caulk.
If you are using a combination of drywall and MLV, attach the MLV to the wall studs first, then attach the drywall over the MLV.
In addition to adding mass to the walls, you can also improve soundproofing by sealing any air leaks around doors, windows, and electrical outlets. You can use caulk, weatherstripping, or acoustic foam to seal these gaps.
Finally, you can also add acoustic panels to the walls to absorb sound. Acoustic panels are available in a variety of materials, including foam, fiberglass, and mineral wool. You can attach acoustic panels to the walls with screws, staples, or adhesive.
Here are some additional tips for DIY soundproofing walls:
- Use the highest STC (sound transmission class) rated materials possible.
- Make sure that all seams and gaps are properly sealed.
- Consider soundproofing the ceiling and floor as well as the walls.
- If you are unsure about how to soundproof your walls, consult with a professional.
