DIY Handprint Ornaments

Materials:

• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 cup salt
• 1 cup warm water
• Food coloring (optional)
• Rolling pin
• Cookie cutter or bowl
• Pencil or straw
• Ribbon or twine

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 250°F (120°C).
2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add water a little at a time, mixing until dough forms. Knead dough for 2-3 minutes, or until smooth.
3. If desired, divide dough in half and add food coloring to one half.
4. Roll out dough to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut out circles or other shapes using a cookie cutter or bowl.
5. Press child’s hand (or foot) into the dough to create a handprint or footprint.
6. Use a pencil or straw to poke a hole at the top of the ornament for hanging.
7. Bake ornaments for 2-3 hours, or until completely dry.
8. Let ornaments cool completely before painting.
9. Paint ornaments using acrylic paint or craft paint.
10. Once paint has dried, add ribbon or twine for hanging.

Tips:

• For a more durable ornament, coat with a clear glaze spray.
• To add glitter, sprinkle glitter over the wet paint and let dry.
• To make a personalized ornament, add the child’s name and the year to the ornament.
• Be creative and have fun! There are endless possibilities for decorating handprint ornaments.

Variations:

• Salt dough ornaments can also be used to make other shapes, such as snowflakes, stars, and hearts.
• To make a three-dimensional ornament, press the child’s hand into the dough and then cut around the handprint, leaving a 1/4-inch border. Roll out a second piece of dough and cut out a circle the same size as the handprint. Place the handprint on the circle and press the edges together to seal.
• To make a handprint ornament with a raised design, press the child’s hand into the dough and then use a craft knife to carve out a design.
• To make a handprint ornament with a photo, print out a small photo of the child and glue it to the ornament before painting.
