To make a DIY scratching post, you will need:

Cut the post to the desired height.
If using a plywood base, cut it to a size that is larger than the post.
Attach the post to the base using screws or nails.
Apply a generous amount of hot glue to the bottom of the post and start wrapping the sisal rope around it, tightly.
Continue wrapping the rope up the post, overlapping the previous layer by about 1/2 inch.
Once you have reached the top of the post, secure the end of the rope with hot glue.
Allow the glue to dry completely before letting your cat use the scratching post.

Tips:

For a more durable scratching post, use a thicker sisal rope.
You can also use carpet instead of sisal rope, but it will not last as long.
If you are not using a plywood base, make sure the post is heavy enough that it will not tip over when your cat uses it.
You can decorate your scratching post by adding toys or other accessories to it.
